Last week, I bought a chunk of frozen Orange Roughy (hoplostethus atlanticus). After noting that the fish had been prepared and shipped from New Zealand, my fiancee decided to look it up. We discovered that it can live almost 150 years. Their growth is slow and they don’t reproduce until an estimated 30 years of age. It is for these reasons, that they are susceptible to over-fishing and exploitation. It is also for these reasons that I will never eat this fish again. The Roughy’s alternate name is “deep sea perch” however, according to blueocean.org, Tilapia makes a great substitute if you’ve decided not to eat them either.
